1/31/1941 | Second Lieutenant Premindra Singh Bhagat of the Bombay Sappers showed an act of unparalleled bravery and inspiring leadership when commanding a detachment of 21 Field company of the Bombay Sappers on the road to Gondar, in Abyssinia. Hence, The Victoria Cross (VC) was bestowed upon him and he became the first Indian Commissioned Officer receipeant of The Victoria Cross (VC). |

11/1/1948 | An Indian brigade group supported by the 7th Cavalry (Stuart tanks) broke through the Great Himalayan Range at Zojila to drive out the invaders from Ladakh district. At approximately 3,500 metres, this was the highest point in the history of warfare that tanks had operated. |
5/2/1953 | 40 persons were reported losing their lives today in the first crash of a jet airliner in commercial service. The jetliner, a British-built Comet, plunged to earth in a violent storm just a few minutes after taking off from Calcutta. It was carrying a party of rubber and tin operators from Malaya to England. There were no survivors. Two Comets have crashed before, one last October and one in March, but neither was carrying passengers. |

1/26/1950 | The new Indian awards known as Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra and Vir Chakra, were finally selected in June 1948 and annouced on the first Republic Day. Param Vir Chakra to the Victoria Cross, the Maha Vir Chakra to the Indian Order of Merit and the Vir Chakra is equivalent to the Military Cross. The Ashoka Chakra series, meant for gallantry other than in the face of the enemy, was probably meant to replace the George Cross, Albert Medal and George Medal. |
