3/3/1839Jamshedji Nasarvanji Tata, famous industrialist and father of modern technology, was born at Navsari near Surat, Gujarat. He started cotton mills in Bombay and Nagpur and founded the Tata Iron and Steel Company, which is one of the largest integrated steel mills in the world.
1/15/1898Nanasaheb Ramji Tawde, educationist and scientist, was born at Taluq Malvan, Maharashtra.
6/15/1937Kumar Shri Indrajitsinhji, cricketer (Indian keeper in 60's), was born in Jamnagar.
12/12/1955The President promulgated an ordinance providing the usage of Hindi with English for official purposes of Indian Union. B.G. Kher Commission (under article 344(I) of the Constitution) constituted. Hindi Teaching Scheme was introduced under Ministry of Home Affairs.
8/16/1946Hindus and Muslims riot in Calcutta. 90 people lost their lives and other 900 were hurt. The Muslim League observed a ""Direct Action Day"" and announced its withdrawal of support from all plans.
